(Music and Lyrics by Steve McAndrew)
eyes straining northwards to the jewel of the aegean sea
itchy feet longing to step once more on the isle where time runs free
via panormitis or straight to the 'new town' shore
the smell of the herbs, the donkey's call, oh to be caressed once more
(by the) SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND
bobbing like a cork at midnight on the waves of sesklia sound
contemplating the depths of all the friendships we have found
phosphor sparks fly from the bow and sparkle in the wake
"parakalo", "ena ouzo my friend", and "yamas" for old times sake
(and the) SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND
we hope she staves off time's changing hours
though any friend of symi's will be a friend of ours
will be a true friend of ours
(and that) SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND
we climb the kali strata to our rooms on chorio hill
the yialos waves crash wildly, while the pedi waves lie still
conversations with well-etched faces, toothless grins and symi wine
this love will last forever and will stand the test of time
(fueled by the) SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND, SYMI WIND
Blow on forever.............Our SYMI WIND
Comment:- This is the original recording completed in 2004 of my Symi anthem that I feel, although my autobiographical observation and expression of love for the magical isle that is Symi Island of the Dodecanese Island chain in Greece, that often absolutely encapsulates the feelings felt by so many others that know this jewel of The Aegean Sea!
The second verse is based around a magical evening we spent with Frank and Eva, the Taxiarchis Apartments patrons and our very, very good friends, who invited us out one evening for fishing on their small wooden boat.
It was a flat calm evening and we left port under a crescent moon before sailing down the East coast of Symi under cover of darkness excepting the moon!
This was my first experience of seeing the golden underwater fireglows created by the hull travelling through the water igniting the phosphorous and trailing off behind the boat, made even more stunning because of the near darkness.
Also to look up at the myriads of stars like diamonds on black velvet was truly awe inspiring.
Thank you Frank and Eva and this song is dedicated to you and your never-ending hospitality, Linda and I love you and your wonderful family.
